Man, I’ve been coding for a long time now, I can do it fluently in 3 languages and not so fluently in about 8, I love learning new things but I believe I long passed the phase of coding just for fun, like going to hackerrank or leetcode and grinding on problems in my spare time and for some reason, in every interview I get asked about my github profile and what repos are interesting there, honestly, NONE!, NULL, NIL, NAN.
I don’t know if I’m just getting too old but I think it’s stupid to expect me to code at work and continue coding at home just because I’m a Software Engineer, if I was a Gynecologist, would I be expected to check pussies on my spare time just because I’m a Gynecologist? or maybe if I was a Boxer, would I be expected to beat people up randomly on my spare time?, this is a problem in the industry, the more problems I solve in leetcode doesn’t necessarily correlate to how good of an addition I would be to your team, it’s a measure of how good I am in data structures and algorithms and solving competitive programming kind of questions.
The same applies to side projects, just because I have some doesn’t mean I’m better than others, I have none!, zero side projects at the moment, I use my spare time to be with my family, play with my kids and just learn new things out of programming and it is completely fine if you do the same.
Quite frankly, this shouldn’t be a topic in the interviews…
